Why is it important for teens to journal?
Keeping a journal is so important through all stages of our lives, but it’s an especially great habit for teenagers to get into and take with them into young adulthood.
Journaling helps bring clarity to your thoughts, and feelings and helps to discover things about yourself you didn’t even know were there.
Teenagers these days have so much weighing on them between school, sports, parents, friends, hormones, social media, and the list goes on.
To take a few minutes to sit down and release your thoughts and get them onto paper is such a great way of getting to know who you are and what you believe about different things.
What are the benefits of Journaling for teens?
Keeping a journal is a great practice that can have many benefits especially when you start as a teenager.
See a few of the many benefits below:
- Builds confidence in who you are and what you believe – Instilling confidence in teenagers is so important. To have a strong foundation of self as a teen is an unmatched trait to have and take with you into young adulthood. A tool as simple as journaling can really help with preparation for the world ahead.
- Safe Place – To be able to get your thoughts and feelings out freely with no worries about grammar or being graded is very freeing. You say whatever you want, however you want, and know that this is something for your eyes only.
- Self-awareness – Self-awareness is one of the best traits a person can have. Being aware of oneself can save you from a lot of problems. When you journal and have the opportunity to read and reflect on what you wrote at previous times, you tap into a level of self-awareness automatically. This is really beneficial for your growth as a human being.
- Expressing and sorting through your thoughts and feelings when asking the right questions – When you are sure of yourself and in what and who you are, you feel more comfortable in speaking up for yourself when needed.
- Reflection – It is great to be able to look back at your old journal entries and reflect on how far you’ve come. Also, to see what you once thought about certain things. To see growth and change is great encouragement that you are on the right path.
- Overall health – Journaling helps all aspects of your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. You will be surprised how light you feel once you can emotionally dump your thoughts onto paper. Carrying around energy from our thoughts and feelings can bog us down and affect the other aspects of our lives.
How to Journal?
The great thing about journaling is that you make the rules! you can write a page, half a page, or sometimes once you get started you may end up writing 2-3 pages if the thoughts start flowing! It’s completely up to you!
For example, some days your entry might just be a few words, a sentence, or a quote, and only you have to know what it means. All you need is a journal and something to write with.
However, coming up with things to journal about is not always easy, so below is a list of 40 journal prompts for teens:
